The elegance andsymbolism of emeralds

Emeralds hold a rich history and have a unique character and meaning

With fine emeralds being rarer than diamonds, this precious gemstone has been treasured and sought after for thousands of years. Known for their rich green colour and natural beauty, emeralds symbolise rebirth, wisdom, love and growth. Revered by ancient civilisations - famously loved by Cleopatra - their elegance is also strongly associated with the art deco period. Their crystal structure is suited to octagonal and square cuts with and stepped facets, making the perfect fit for this style of design. Unlike many gemstones, natural emeralds are celebrated for their unique inclusions, often poetically described as a “garden” (jardin) within the stone. These internal features are seen not as flaws, but as a mark of authenticity, giving each emerald its own character and story. The birthstone for May, and used to mark 55 years of marriage, emeralds are a stone to celebrate with. Whether set into a contemporary engagement ring or an Art Deco-inspired pendant, emeralds bring a timeless, meaningful elegance to any bespoke jewellery design.

Bespoke Emerald Necklaces

Amanda has been commissioned to create ethical emerald necklaces, giving new life to heirloom stones

A contemporary but classic necklace was created by Amanda using a client’s own 8ct emerald and gold, recycled from an heirloom ring that had been inherited. The client felt that the original ring design was not suited to their style, so it was broken down and turned into this necklace and a set of diamond earrings. The large emerald is held in a classic handmade 22ct gold setting on a chain with one of Amanda’s signature interlocking clasps; the octagon shape complementing the setting. Find out more about this necklace here, and on Amanda's Instagram post.

A minimalist and architectural design was created by Amanda for another client, with a bespoke emerald and platinum pendant, handmade by Amanda in her Hatton Garden workshop. The necklace design features the client’s own emerald set in recycled platinum. Crisp clean design with the emerald held at the short ends of the stone allows for deep cut-out V’s to bring out the best in this gemstone’s vivid colour. Find out more about this bespoke emerald necklace here, and you can find out more about the commissioning process here.

Bespoke Emerald Rings

Amanda has drawn on both Art Deco designs and contemporary architecture to create her ethical bespoke emerald rings for clients, each with its own story.

Clients have wished to draw on the timeless sophistication and complexity of emeralds for ethical engagement rings, and with one wishing to repurpose heirloom stones with contemporary style.

Art Deco inspired ethical engagement rings

Clients have wished to draw on the timeless sophistication and complexity of emeralds for ethical engagement rings, and with one wishing to repurpose heirloom stones with contemporary style. Amanda has drawn on Art Deco design as the inspiration for two ethical emerald engagement ring designs. The variations in design highlighting how gold and diamonds can be used to support the emerald taking centre stage in classic style. Both use stepped shoulders but baguette diamonds offer a complementary form for the emerald, while a series of round cuts in rectangular settings speak to Manhattan's skyline. Both designs are underpinned with ethical practices, using 100% recycled gold, or Fairtrade gold. You can see more about the art deco emerald engagement ring with baguette diamonds here, and in Amanda's Instagram post, and video.

Contemporary architectural ethical engagement ring

A client wanted to breathe new life into an old piece of jewellery and to show off the beauty of the emerald for her engagement ring. The brief: Clean lines, graceful proportions, and an unobstructed side view of the emerald in landscape orientation. The setting tapers down to the band so a plain, unshaped wedding ring could sit comfortably alongside it. This ethical emerald engagement ring was handcrafted using 100% recycled solid gold, the collet holds the emerald securely place while tapering down to its narrow base and completes the circle of the ring. You can see more of this contemporary emerald engagement ring here, and in Amanda's Instagram post here. If you are interested in commissioning your own ethical emerald engagement ring, you can see Amanda's gallery of ring designs here, find out more about the commissioning process here, and get in touch to book an appointment.

Ethical Sourcingand Design Practices

Amanda's work is underpinned by her values, working to create responsible emerald jewellery for ethically conscious clients.

As a goldsmith, being a designer and maker, Amanda's work is underpinned by craftsmanship; she creates each piece of bespoke ethical emerald jewellery by hand from scratch. This means she is able to specialise in re-purposing heirloom pieces of jewellery, breathing new life into unworn family treasures. As she hand-alloys the gold she uses, she can recycle precious metals, and create new designs from old.  The provenance and responsible sourcing of materials is important to her. So, any new materials used can be traceable, and ensure they support the communities, workers and environment. From ethical and traceable emeralds, to using Fairmined and Fairtrade gold, and other recycled precious metals. You can find out more about Amanda's ethical jewellery practice and values here.
